BREAKING NEWS: ANOTHER TOYOTA RECALL
Wednesday 14th November 2012
Article by Charis Whitcombe
Just five weeks after news broke that Toyota was recalling over 7m cars due to a window switch failure, another recall has been announced by the Japanese car manufacturer.
This time, 2.7 million cars – including the Corolla and the Prius hybrid – will be recalled as a result of steering wheel and water pump problems.
No accidents due to the steering wheel fault have so far been reported but, according to the BBC, a Toyota spokesman has admitted that the problem could, in time, “result in a loss of steering ability”.
The spokesman, Joichi Tachikawa, explained to the BBC that due to "insufficient hardness of the steering shaft", the splines which connect the extension shaft to the gearbox may eventually wear out if the steering wheel is "frequently and forcefully turned to the full lock position while driving at a very slow speed".
This further recall so soon after the last is bound to cause problems for Toyota but – as with the last recall – one of the main reasons that the announcements have made headline news is Toyota’s enviable reputation for reliability.
Recalls announced by a less ‘reliable’ car manufacturer are far more likely to be overlooked by the international media.
Toyota Owners Club will be bringing you further updates on the recall as more news is released.
